After saying he would boycott the Golden Globes in 2023, Brendan Fraser receives a nomination for Best Actor
The Golden Globes have nominated Brendan Fraser for Best Actor, despite him refusing to attend after a groping incident.
The shortlist also included Olivia Colman, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Thompson, Andrew Garfield, Imelda Staunton, Daniel Craig, Colin Firth, and Carey Mulligan.
Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which puts on the Golden Globes, considers the 80th edition to be a “make or break” event.
Last Year Ceremony
An investigation by the Los Angeles Times revealed the group hadn’t included any black members, a finding compounded by allegations of ethical misconduct. Hollywood spurned last year’s ceremony.
There was a boycott of the awards by studios and stars. NBC cancelled its annual telecast after Tom Cruise returned his Globes.
Despite being nominated for Best Actor, Fraser says he will not attend the Globes for his role as an obese teacher in The Whale.
The HFPA president and longtime member Phillip Berk was alleged to have groped Fraser in 2003, according to a report in 2018. In its findings, the HFPA discovered that Berk “inappropriately touched” Fraser, but that his actions “were intended as a joke rather than as sexual advances”.
Fraser told GQ last month that he wouldn’t attend because of the history he has with the group. I was not raised by a hypocrite, and neither was my mother. I can be called many things, but not that.”
Best Actor Performance
For his performance in Living, Fraser will compete against Bill Nighy, Hugh Jackman, Austin Butler and Jeremy Pope in the best actor category.

The HFPA has overhauled its membership and implemented reforms designed to curb unethical behaviour over the past year and a half. Six black members of the group now have the right to vote.
In order to make a comeback, the organisation hopes to have a star-studded nominees list. A sluggish year for cinema attendance may tempt studios to promote recognition for their films this time.
In the category for best director, however, no women were nominated, adding to concerns over the Globes’ lack of diversity.
The Banshees of Insherin, directed by Martin McDonagh, and The Fabelmans, directed by Steven Spielberg, were also nominated.
Everything Everywhere All At Once, directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, and Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann, received nominations.
Having starred in The Crown, Imelda Staunton is nominated for the now-traditional Globe award.
As with Claire Foy and Olivia Colman, she hopes to follow in their footsteps by winning best actress.
The first season of Staunton’s role as the older Queen was released just weeks after the monarch’s death on Netflix.
In the motion picture drama category, Colman and Blanchett were nominated. Michelle Williams, Ana De Armas, and Viola Davis were also present.
Empire Of Light was nominated for Colman, Tar for Blanchett, The Woman King for Davis, Blonde for De Armas, and The Fabelmans for Williams.
A knife out mystery, Square of Sadness, and Everything Everywhere All At Once were nominated for best motion picture: musical or comedy.
Michelle Yeoh, Lesley Manville, Anya Taylor Joy, Margot Robbie and Lesley Manville joined Dame Emma Thompson as nominees for the best actress honour.
As part of the parallel category of best performance by an actor in a motion picture, Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Craig and Colin Farrell were also nominated.
Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way Of Water led the categories in the best motion picture: drama category. Along with them, Elvis, The Fabelmans, and Tar ranked at the top of the list.
With “Carolina”, “Lift Me Up”, and “Hold My Hand”, Taylor Swift competes against Rihanna and Lady Gaga for best original song.
Pinocchio’s “Ciao Papa” and “Naatu Naatu” are also nominated.
On 10 January 2023, Los Angeles will host the Golden Globe Awards.
In an attempt to reverse declining ratings for awards shows, the event has been moved to Tuesday night.
