AT&T 5G Operates by 2 Companies Samsung and Apple

In a reversal of recent public statements by AT&T, it has admitted that it won’t upgrade old phones and tablets to its new midband 5G frequencies, some of which were released as recently as June.

At&T Software Update

The At&T told CNET on August 23 it would update its software to enable the 3.45 GHz C-band, which the carrier acquired for $9.1 billion in early 2022, to be used by the iPhone 12 and 13 in addition to Pixel 6, Galaxy S21 models, and low-cost Motorola phones. AT&T 5G phones would benefit from wider coverage and faster average speeds when combined with the low-band access it already provides.

After winning its hard-fought spectrum auction in January 2022, AT&T’s stance in January 2022 was quite different. According to Chris Sambar, AT&T’s executive vice president of technology operations, 3.45 GHz support will only be available on “the major flagship devices from the big OEMs” starting in 2022.

Flagship Device to Support AT&T

In an interview with CNET last week, AT&T admitted that it has about 11 newer flagship devices that support its new bands, not over 30 older models. According to Jim Greer, AT&T’s assistant vice president of corporate communications, the significant discrepancy was due to “an inaccurate list… that was provided by error and incorrectly confirmed during fact-checking” of CNET’s post.

A software update to make “older” phones viable is still not certain. AT&T could have misunderstood frequency capabilities and hardware in the phones it sold, or it could have failed to obtain FCC certification.

As with the Samsung S22, the iPhone 14 is likely to have the X65, a Qualcomm modem similar to the SDX60M used in the iPhone 13. According to PC Magazine’s post from February, the X65 is capable of combining AT&T’s frequencies from the lower and upper parts of the n77 subsection of the C-band, generating 85MHz versus 45MHz for the X60.

Accessible AT&T 5G Phones

The carrier’s 3.7 GHz C-band, as well as mmWave and low-band frequencies, will still be accessible to 5G-capable phones on AT&T. Some of AT&T 5G phones have three-year contracts, regardless of the fact that they won’t be able access its prime 3.45 GHz spectrum.

In its handling of new network technologies, AT&T has a tradition of blending facts and marketing. The AT&T 5G network was notably slower than the 4G networks of many of its competitors when its 5G network was finally launched.
